“You look beautiful, like always.”
The smile he receives makes him feel all giddy inside and sends his heart fluttering at the thought of that simple sentence coming from a certain someone. It made him want to squeal because what else could he have been thinking? But he couldn’t let his guard down or risk being caught by his friends so he kept himself quiet and instead just smiled back.
It was a rare occurrence that they got together outside the school, but it made things easier for them when they both had to attend different schools, so they agreed to meet up once a month or even more sometimes. He was already used to it by now. They never had long conversations; they simply said whatever came to mind with no real meaning behind it. Sometimes they would joke around and playfully insult each other. Other times he would tell him about one of his classes or even about something as trivial as a classmate or a teacher, which he liked greatly to see.
They were always good friends.
He felt bad to call her that. It wasn’t right and it certainly didn’t describe their friendship. She was the only girl who ever made him blush and smile like that. She was definitely the prettiest thing in this world. That’s why he couldn’t bring himself to think of her as just a friend. Not yet at least. She had to wait a little while longer before she could officially become his girlfriend.
It was a little hard keeping himself occupied during the day. Especially since he couldn’t concentrate on anything except the girl sitting next to him. He was worried about what could be taking her so long. It couldn’t possibly be that big of an issue, she always took such great care of herself… Maybe he should go look for her and make sure everything is alright. If only his brain wasn’t completely fried and he could actually function properly. But no. Instead he has to keep on staring blankly into space and not even notice his best friend sneaking some fries in between his fingers.
At first, he was annoyed, but after a couple of minutes, he stopped caring and gave up trying to stop her from eating everything that’s lying next to his plate. It might come as a shocker, but there were some things that you just can’t control your best friend on and especially not when it comes to food. It was almost as if he was incapable of stopping her from doing anything, whether it be eating, drinking, sleeping, studying or any sort of activity. In fact, it’s almost as if she doesn’t know how to do anything else but eat and sleep, and he’d really prefer her to keep the latter at a minimum.
He sighed deeply and buried his head deeper into his arms crossed over the desk. There was nothing much to do now. He knew he should probably start working again but, well, what would the point of finishing his work even though it would take hours? He tried to focus on the numbers written in front of him but they weren’t helping him much at all. His mind kept wandering back to her. And that feeling wasn’t something that was supposed to exist. She was way out of his league and she deserved better than him. So, he pushed those thoughts away and focused once more on the numbers in front of him.
There really wasn’t much else he could do besides sit here and wait. Well, at least, until she returned and could help him get back on track. At least he hoped so. For some reason, he really needed to finish his homework. He felt exhausted just looking at the worksheet in front of him. It was almost impossible to remember anything anymore. And that was just because of one subject. How was he going to manage without a partner to help him? He was sure that she had already finished her work by now. And as usual, she had left her work somewhere where he couldn’t find it. It seemed pretty pointless, to try to find it anyway. It was a stupid idea, he really shouldn’t bother. Still, he couldn’t shake off his curiosity and went looking for it. He looked everywhere and even under every table and bookcase that he could find. There were tons of books but still, she couldn’t just leave her work anywhere without telling anyone. It was kind of ridiculous to keep thinking about something like that. It would just make his brain hurt.
